The first hair clip shown : ​Period: Art Deco (circa 1920s - 1930s)

This clip is a classic example of the Art Deco style, which emphasized symmetry, geometric shapes, and glamour.

​Description:

This is a "dress clip," designed to be worn on the edges of clothing, such as a neckline (particularly a square or sweetheart neckline), a lapel, a pocket, or even on a hat or handbag. The design is symmetrical with a fountain or crown-like motif, entirely paved with small, clear rhinestones. The metal is a silver-tone "pot metal," which was common for costume jewelry of this era. The clip on the back is hinged and has small teeth to grip the fabric securely without piercing it. Some of the stones have yellowed with age, which is very common for pieces of this vintage due to the glue used at the time.

Art Deco dress clips are highly collectible. As this piece is unsigned, its value is based on its style and condition. Identical clips were originally sold in pairs, which are more valuable together. For a single, unsigned clip in this condition, the estimated resale value is in the $30 to $55 CAD range.

The second one shown : ​Period: Retro (circa late 1930s - 1940s)

The style of this clip marks the transition from the rigid geometry of Art Deco to the flowing, asymmetrical, and often whimsical designs of the Retro period.

This is a "fur clip," which is distinguished from a dress clip by its mechanism. As you can see on the back, it has two sharp prongs designed to pierce and hold securely onto heavier fabrics like a fur stole or a thick wool coat lapel. The design features a swirling, ribbon or scroll motif, which was very popular in the 1940s. It is set with a mix of round and baguette-cut clear rhinestones. Like the other clip, some stones have yellowed over time.

This is a strong example of Retro-era design. As an individual, unsigned fur clip, its value is comparable to the Art Deco piece and also depends on its condition. The estimated resale value for this single clip is in the $35 to $60 CAD range.
